Results
Completed slope stabilisation three months ahead of schedule, allowing the bridge to open significantly earlier than planned
Restored a critical transport link for Coromandel communities.
Delivered robust stabilisation solution protecting the bridge’s long-term integrity
Demonstrated strong collaboration with JV partners and NZTA.
Recognised as a Finalist at the 2024 CCNZ Construction Awards, highlighting industry acknowledgement of the project’s impact.
Project
Solution
IInstalled soil nails, rock anchors, and shotcrete to stabilise bridge abutments
Mobilised experienced international team with specialist drilling equipment
Applied rigorous quality and safety controls in a multi-contractor environment
Adapted methodologies quickly in response to changing design and ground conditions
Project
Challenges
Design and construction ran concurrently, requiring the stabilisation scope to be adapted in real-time as the bridge design evolved
Highly variable and weather-affected ground conditions demanded flexible drilling and anchoring methods
Tight site constraints meant multiple contractors were working side by side in a limited footprint, increasing the complexity of staging and safety management
A fast-tracked program placed pressure on sequencing, approvals, and delivery timeframes

Project
Overview
The collapse of a 100m section of State Highway 25A during early 2023 storms severed a vital transport link in the Coromandel Peninsula. Waka Kotahi NZTA fast-tracked the construction of a new 124m bridge at Taparahi, with slope stabilisation works critical to protecting the new structure.
Geovert was engaged by the McConnell Dowell and Fulton Hogan JV to deliver slope stabilisation around the bridge abutments and approaches. Works were executed under challenging conditions and with evolving design inputs, but completed three months ahead of schedule.
