Results
Successfully upgraded tower foundations while maintaining uninterrupted power transmission
Reduced site preparation costs and environmental impact compared with traditional underpinning methods
Achieved efficient programme delivery through rapid design validation and streamlined construction
Demonstrated the GEOBEAM system as a proven, scalable solution for transmission tower life extension
Project
Solution
Implemented the GEOBEAM system, installing two micropiles per tower leg to achieve load capacity of 500kN tension and 50kN shear
Developed and deployed a custom casing drill bit to penetrate existing steel foundation members safely
Conducted site investigations and sacrificial test anchors to validate design parameters prior to installation
Used lightweight tracked drill rigs and remote access equipment to eliminate the need for heavy site preparation
Project
Challenges
Working directly beneath live transmission towers required strict safety planning and specialised techniques
Drilling through existing steel foundations demanded the development of a bespoke casing drill bit
Limited access and constrained working space increased logistical and equipment challenges
Verification of foundation interface performance was essential before full-scale implementation

Project
Overview
Four transmission towers near Rockhampton required foundation upgrades to extend operational life while maintaining continuous service. This project marked the first application of the patented GEOBEAM system for transmission tower retrofits. By integrating micropile technology with existing infrastructure, the works provided a sustainable solution that minimised site disturbance, eliminated the need for large concrete volumes, and avoided costly haul roads or piling platforms.
