Solution

  • Utilised a purpose-built low-headroom drill rig capable of drilling with casing to safely install soil nails and ground anchors beneath the bridge structure.

  • Revised the retaining wall methodology to incorporate a two-pass shotcrete application with additional mesh reinforcement and extended soil nails where excavation exceeded design assumptions.

  • Completed mesh fixing and wet-mix structural shotcrete placement to construct the permanent retaining walls while maintaining program continuity.

  • Installed instrumented soil nails to provide ongoing performance monitoring and independently verified all shotcrete in accordance with VicRoads requirements.

Overview

Geovert was engaged by BMD Group to deliver the ground engineering package for the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade, part of Victoria's Big Build program. The works involved constructing soil-nailed shotcrete retaining walls beneath the existing Point Cook Road bridge to stabilise the embankment supporting a new freeway ramp. Working beneath a live bridge with restricted headroom and alongside one of Melbourne's busiest roads, the project demanded specialist equipment, adaptable construction methodologies and strict compliance with VicRoads quality and durability requirements.
