Slope Stability 2026 took place at the Lima Convention Center from 26 to 29 October, the first time the international symposium has been held in Peru. Organised by the Large Open Pit Project with the support of the Sociedad Peruana de Geoingeniería and the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Perú (IIMP), the event brought together mine geotechnical engineers, hydrogeologists, researchers and operators for four days of technical sessions, keynotes and short courses. Geovert attended and exhibited, represented by Anthony Teen, Carrie Heaven and George Stick.

Holding the symposium in Lima put it on the doorstep of some of the largest open pit operations in the world, and seeing the sheer scale of South American mining up close was a highlight of the week.

Several case studies looked at how sites are managing dewatering and slope depressurisation, which remain among the less visible but more consequential influences on pit slope performance. It was also encouraging to see the progress being made in downhole instrumentation, and what better subsurface data means for how slopes are monitored and designed.

We also had some valuable discussions on optimising pit slope angles to improve productivity at large open cut mines. Because the slope angle determines how much waste has to be moved to reach ore, a degree or two can make a considerable difference, provided the steeper walls are well managed.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand to say hello. The miniature models of our High Reach Drill (HRD) that we gave away drew a great deal of interest and started plenty of conversations about drilling on steep mine walls. We enjoyed every one of them and look forward to continuing many.

Our thanks also to Dr Teófilo Aquino Vieira da Costa of Vale, for presenting Carrie Heaven with a beautiful gift in recognition of Geovert’s sponsorship of his keynote. It was a privilege to support it, and congratulations to the Large Open Pit Project, the Sociedad Peruana de Geoingeniería and IIMP on an excellent symposium.
