Results

  • Delivered long-term rockfall protection while preserving the natural and cultural integrity of the site.

  • Enabled continued operation of the Kuranda Scenic Rail line throughout construction.

  • Strengthened stakeholder confidence through transparent collaboration with Queensland Rail and heritage authorities.

  • Demonstrated Geovert’s capability to deliver complex, environmentally sensitive infrastructure works in world-class heritage landscapes.

Project

Solution

  • Developed a comprehensive design-build package integrating slope modelling, environmental management, and access planning.

  • Utilised heli-portable drilling and construction equipment, enabling safe installation on slopes up to 600 m above the corridor.

  • Engaged environmental and cultural-heritage consultants to manage site sensitivities and compliance.

  • Applied advanced rockfall modelling and remote-work procedures to minimise exposure and optimise installation efficiency.

Project

Challenges

  • Working above a live passenger railway within a nationally protected World Heritage environment.

  • Limited ground access through dense rainforest and steep slopes requiring full heli-construction logistics.

  • High annual rainfall and extreme humidity creating safety and productivity challenges.

  • Balancing engineering outcomes with stringent cultural-heritage and environmental-management obligations.

slope stabilisation above active scenic rail line

Project

Overview

Queensland Rail engaged Geovert as design-build contractor for Stage 1 of the Kuranda Range Slope Stabilisation Project, part of the iconic Kuranda Scenic Rail line traversing the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area near Cairns. Carrying more than 400 000 passengers annually, the railway required comprehensive treatment of multiple high-risk slopes to mitigate rockfall hazards above live tracks and heritage structures. The works demanded environmentally sensitive methodologies combining rope access and helicopter-supported construction within steep, heavily vegetated terrain extending up to 600m above the line.
