Results

  • Modern rockfall protection systems installed to current engineering standards.

  • Long-term safety of power plant operations and personnel significantly enhanced.

  • Innovative logistics enabled efficient debris removal and construction in steep, restricted terrain.

  • Operational continuity maintained throughout project delivery.

  • Reduced future maintenance requirements through incorporation of self-cleaning barrier designs.

Project

Solution

  • Removal of 700 cubic yards of accumulated debris using a custom-built zip-line system designed for the project.

  • Deployment of a Spider excavator to reach inaccessible lower ravine locations.

  • Installation of five engineered rockfall barrier systems:
Four VX Attenuators, up to 30ft tall and 60ft wide.
One SVX Attenuator, 75ft long by 30ft high.

  • Designed basal openings into upper ravine systems to allow future self-cleaning and reduce maintenance.

  • Stabilisation within the access tunnel’s Zone 11 using Tecco steel mesh with 8ft epoxy-grouted rock bolts, minimising disturbance and accelerating program delivery.

  • Careful scheduling and coordination with power plant operators to align works with operational requirements.

Project

Challenges

  • Ageing and ineffective rockfall nets with compromised retention capacity.

  • Significant debris accumulation (700 cubic yards) in remote, steep terrain.

  • Logistical complexity of working adjacent to an operational hydroelectric facility.

  • Restricted equipment access within ravines and tunnels.

  • Requirement to deliver long-term protection with minimal operational disruption.

Project

Overview

Geovert was contracted to deliver a design-construct project addressing rockfall hazards and deteriorated protective systems at Fremont Canyon Power Plant. The scope included debris removal, rock stabilization, and installation of five engineered rockfall protection systems across steep ravines adjacent to the facility.

Working under challenging access constraints and alongside ongoing operations, the team implemented innovative construction techniques to restore long-term rockfall protection and ensure operational continuity.
