AIM Past Project Title

The Rakaia Bridge, a Mid-Canterbury icon on State Highway 1 60km south of Christchurch, was built in 1939 and is New Zealand's longest road bridge. Concrete repairs and inspections were required for significant number of locations along the 1.7km long structure withmany above the waterways and not fully accessible for the engineers at Opus prior to tendering the works.

Geovert were awarded the contract on an alternative access and repair method to complete the works on the 144No, reinforced concrete spans and piers. Having completed concrete maintenance works on other concrete bridges and structures around NZ using this access method, we proved we would reduce any footprint and impact on the river, as we did not use scaffold which requires consent and would also be an issue during regular flood events. Individual defects were identified and numbered. Works included breaking affected concrete, cleaning with 4000psi water blasters, priming and then repairing with Sika mono top. Each repair was recorded and measured with before, during and after images on the repair sheets. Drills had dust extractors fitted and concrete chips were captured and removed ensuring the waterways remained unaffected.
